Biography

FLTLT Hayley Moulds was the first female to gain her captaincy at an air-to-air refuelling Squadron in the Royal Australian Air Force.  

Hayley gained her Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Arts (French Major) at the University of Queensland & Université de Lausanne (Switzerland) in 2011. After working in the journalism field for a few years, she realised that she had to pursue her love of aviation and began her flying career on the Sunshine Coast. Whilst gaining her private pilot license, she began the process of applying for the RAAF. After successfully gaining her wings in 2015, she was posted to 33 Squadron in Amberley to fly the KC-30A.  

Throughout her career, she has participated in multiple exercises such as Enduring Dragon - Japan, Red Flag - USA, UNODC Repatriation – Fiji, Talisman Sabre, Pitch Black, and multiple more. She has been deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Okra and Operation Accordion three times in the last four years.  

She is currently undertaking Flying Instructors Course at Central Flying School, RAAF East Sale. Once completed, she will be posted to No 1 Flying Training School, where she will instruct ab initio pilots on the recently acquired PC-21. 

The resilience and mental fitness required to complete training is sometimes a difficult and illusive concept to grasp, but an important component of successfully completing pilot training. This concept, however, can be transferred into all careers. Hayley will talk about the challenges around being a young Captain (about 1000 hours) and the mental fortitude required to succeed in military aviation. 

Hayley currently lives in East Sale, Victoria, with her husband, Alex (RAAF C-17 pilot) and chocolate dachshund, Winston.
