Set against the backdrop of the September 11 attacks, COME FROM AWAY is the Tony award-winning musical that explores the true events that transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland - almost doubling the population. This ground-breaking piece of theatre that examines the human spirit and our capacity to show empathy in times of great adversity.
The characters in the musical are based on real Gander residences, stranded travellers and airline staff including Beverley Bass, the captain of one of the planes ordered to land at Gander International Airport.

Beverley Bass is a retired American airplane pilot who made history for women in aviation. In 1976, Beverley became the third female pilot for American Airlines, in 1986 became their first female captain, and in the same year led the first all-female crew flight in the history of commercial jet aviation. Beverley was flying Paris to Dallas when the 9/11 attacks occurred and was ordered to land in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland until the American airspace re-opened five days later. On the 10th anniversary of the incident, she was interviewed by two playwrights who soon wrote the Broadway smash-hit musical ‘Come from Away’ about the events that transpired in Gander following 9/11, featuring Beverley as one of the lead characters.
