This year’s Women in Aviation/Aerospace Summits will reflect on the International Women’s Day theme #BreaktheBias.

#BreaktheBias raises valuable discussions across Australia and around the world. ‘Breaking the bias’ represents a huge spectrum of issues and challenges faced by individuals and organisations in the Australian Aviation, Aerospace, and Space sectors

SUMMIT OPENING ADDRESS

/ Pip Spence | Chief Executive Officer & Director of Aviation Safety at Civil Aviation Safety Authority

Pip Spence is Chief Executive Officer and Director of Aviation Safety for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

Prior to joining CASA, Pip was the Chief Operating Officer at the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and before that the Deputy Secretary for Transport, which included responsibility for aviation and airport policy and program matters. Prior to that she had a number of senior roles across the APS.

KEYNOTE

/ MAJGEN Stephen Jobson, AM CSC | Commander, Army Aviation Command at the Australian Army

Major General Jobson is serving as the inaugural Commander Aviation Command, where he is responsible for the generation, modernisation and airworthiness of the Australian Army Aviation capability. Prior to his promotion and present appointment, Major General Jobson served in 2020 as the Chief of Operations of the NATO Resolute Support Mission, Afghanistan. 

Major General Jobson joined the Army in 1989 and completed officer training at the Australian Defence Force Academy and Royal Military College – Duntroon, graduating into the Army Aviation Corps. He then completed No. 56 Army Basic Pilot’s Course as a Black Hawk pilot.

Major General Jobson has been fortunate to command at every level to Major General, including airmobile troop and squadron command in the 5th Aviation Regiment and Commanding Officer of the 6th Aviation Regiment. In 2014-2016 he served as the Commandant Army Recruit Training Centre followed by command of the 16th Aviation Brigade during the period 2017-2019.

Major General Jobson has commanded numerous domestic and international aviation task groups, including humanitarian assistance to Papua New Guinea in the drought of 1997/98 and disaster response to Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake. During his command of the 6th Aviation Regiment, he led the Joint Rotary Wing Group formed to respond to the 2010/11 South East Queensland Floods and as Commander 16th Aviation Brigade he led Joint Task Force 646 to provide assistance to the people of North-West Queensland during the 2019 Monsoon Flood.

Major General Jobson’s instructional, staff and representational postings include instructing at the Royal Military College – Duntroon; Staff Officer Grade Two Combat Aviation at the Land Warfare Development Centre; Staff Officer Grade One Operations Headquarters 16th Brigade (Aviation); and the Australian Army Liaison Officer to the United States Army Aviation Centre of Excellence. In 2001/02 as a Captain he served as an exchange officer in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division as a Black Hawk pilot in Alpha Company, 2-82nd Assault Battalion where he deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina. Following this he was promoted to Major as the 82nd Aviation Brigade Deputy S3 including a deployment to Afghanistan.

In 2012, Major General Jobson was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for service as Commanding Officer of the 6th Aviation Regiment, and in 2020 was awarded Member of the Order of Australia for service as Commandant Army Recruit Training Centre, 16th Aviation Brigade and Joint Task Force 646. For his service as Chief of Operations of the NATO Resolute Support Mission he was awarded the U.S. Legion of Merit (Officer) and the Commendation for Distinguished Service.

Major General Jobson has a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Aviation Management with Distinction, and a Master of Arts (Defence Studies) with Distinction. He is a graduate of the United Kingdom Advanced Command & Staff College, where he was awarded the Thales Prize for Best International Student. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Joint Task Force Commanders Course and Harvard Club of Australia Leadership Program. He has qualified as an Army pilot and aircraft captain on AS-350B Squirrel, S-70A-9 Black Hawk, UH-60L Black Hawk and MRH-90 Taipan helicopters.

Major General Jobson is married to Tania with four teenage and adult children. His leisure interests include swimming, water polo, and military history. He is the Patron of the ADF Water Polo Association.

/ Rhiannon Campbell | Program Director at QinetiQ Australia

Rhiannon joined the Royal Australian Navy in 2003 and commissioned as an officer in the Maritime Warfare stream. Over the next decade she served in various operations such as Op Relex II and Op Resolute. During this time Rhiannon earned her Bachelor's degree in Professional Studies (Peace) during evenings while on maternity leave, also earning qualifications in project management and working towards her Masters in Economic & Regional Development. After separating from the RAN in 2013 Rhiannon spent 3 years in regional Queensland delivering economic development programs aimed at helping small businesses diversify and expand. While in Queensland, Rhiannon led a project coordinating regional industry engagement for the Future Submarine Program. This rekindled her passion for Defence and ultimately led her back to Canberra and the heart of the industry.

Rhiannon is currently the Program Director Joint Capabilities at QinetiQ Australia, leading a multi-disciplinary team in a strategic partnership delivering capability development activities including initial support to the stand up of Defence Space Command and ongoing delivery in navigation warfare, simulation and information warfare.

/ Cate Colman | Lead In Fighter Capability Manager at BAE Systems Australia

Cate Colman is BAE Systems’ Lead in Fighter Capability Manager accountable for capability upgrades to the Hawk fast jet trainer. Cate has a broad base of technical, managerial and leadership experience developed over 20 years’ working for the Department of Defence and Defence industry.

She completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering at the University of Newcastle has a Master’s of Science in Software Development from the UNSW. She is a Chartered Professional Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia. While new to the Aerospace field, she is proud to be working with the Lead in Fighter community to deliver capability to the Royal Australian Air Force.

/ Lieutenant Commander Kate Carriage, CSM RAN | Aerospace Engineer, Senior Engineer 725 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, at the Royal Australian Navy

LCDR Kate Carriage joined Defence as an Avionics Technician. She completed her training and posted to 817SQN Seakings, commissioned as an officer in 2008 and posted to ADFA. LCDR Carriage has worked within Design Engineering, Quality & Safety Engineering, Engineering & Maintenance Policy and then as the Deputy Chief Engineer, finishing a Masters of Reliability Engineering through the University of Maryland.

She attended Australian Command and Staff Course in 2021 where she completed a Masters in Military and Defence Studies and was then selected as AEO (senior engineer) 725SQN. This year, LCDR Carriage was awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal for her efforts as Deputy Chief Engineer, NASPO. LCDR Carriage is now running the Maintenance and Engineering Department in 725SQN.

/ Wing Commander Amanda Gosling Clarke | Aerospace Engineer at the Royal Australian Air Force

Wing Commander Amanda Gosling Clarke joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 2002. Throughout her career as an Aerospace Engineering Officer, she has provided engineering sustainment, design and maintenance support to a variety of aircraft. In 2012 she deployed on Operation Slipper in the Middle East Area of Operations in support of C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

In 2014, Wing Commander Gosling Clarke posted to Project WINTER, an Air Force initiative to increase the number of women employed in non-traditional Air Force roles. Wing Commander Gosling Clarke returned to an engineering position as a Senior Engineering Officer responsible for managing maintenance of 10 x C-27J Spartan transport aircraft. Wing Commander Amanda Gosling Clarke is currently fulfilling a role as a military strategic planner.

/ Anntonette Dailey | Executive Director, Operations & Communications at Australian Space Agency

Anntonette is an Executive Director at the Australian Space Agency and commenced in the Agency soon after it was established in July 2018. Anny is responsible for the operations of the Agency and ensuring it meets it government requirements as well establishing its governance arrangement. In addition to managing the parliamentary interaction, finances, human resources and event management, Anny is also responsible for inspirational element of the Civil Space Strategy and leads the Australian Space Discovery Centre for the Agency and has a personal goal to meet the key values of the Agency – namely to inspire Australians and ‘do cool stuff’.

In 2019, Anntonette was identified in the Financial Review’s as one of Australia’s 100 Most Influential Women.

As a chartered professional engineer, Anny graduated with honours at the University of Technology Sydney and took on a career in sustainability. Working across multiple Government agencies as well as not for profit and consultancy – Anny brings more than 14 years as a senior executive capability to the Agency.

/ Melissa Jenkins | Senior Interior Designer at Architectus

Mel is a Senior Interior Designer at Architectus, specialising in the aviation sector.

She is passionate about inclusive design and the role designers and architects have in making users feel comfortable within the space.

During her time at Architectus she has been involved in the development of an interactive simulation for airports that focus on enabling or improving the travel experience for people with disabilities and special needs. 

/ Fiona Knowles | Director of Learning, Design & Innovation, Swinburne Edge at Swinburne University of Technology

Fiona is a technical, vocational education and training specialist with over 25 years’ experience in the Australian education and training sector.

Fiona manages a multi-functional team of instructional designers and digital learning specialists, project managers and support staff. The projects undertaken by the LDI team include the design and development of customised workforce training and education solutions, as well as collaborative industry projects.

In recognition of her experience in working with industry partners in Australia and internationally, Fiona was awarded the International Partnership Award from the International Partnership Network. Fiona holds multiple vocational and postgraduate qualifications.

/ Yvette (Vee) Payne | Quality Control Analyst at Sikorsky Australia

Born into Aviation, flying her first aircraft at eight years old and in spite of much rebellion during her teenage years, Yvette inevitably followed in her fathers and grandfathers’ footsteps and is now a third generation Mechanical Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME).

She has worked with several large Defence contractors and has performed maintenance on Chinook, Blackhawk and Seahawk helicopters, with some of her career highlights including flying a Blackhawk and being the first Mechanical AME in Australia to commence deep level maintenance on a Romeo Seahawk.

Currently working for Sikorsky Australia, Yvette’s role has been multifaceted since joining the organisation in 2015 and has included anything from maintenance to interviewing, teaching and more. Yvette has gained tertiary qualifications in Organisation Safety & Human Factors during this time and is working toward a Masters in the same discipline. Now in a Quality Analyst role, Yvette is able to use her passion for human factors, aviation and safety to support the growth of and implement change in the organisation and, she hopes, the greater aviation community.

Yvette is known as Vee by her friends and family, and outside of aviation, she loves spending time with her Navy fiancé, her 21-month-old son and their pooches. Beach trips happen on the regular, as does snowboarding in the winter and whenever possible- traveling to far off places.

/ Paschal Somers | Industry Skills Manager at Australian Industry Standards

Paschal Somers is an Industry Skills Manager at Australian industry Standards overseeing the Aviation, Corrections, Defence and Public Safety industries. On behalf of the Industry Reference Committees, he leads projects to ensure national training package qualifications meet industry requirements and standards.

He has an extensive professional background in Vocational Education and Training (VET) spanning over 15 years including experience in adult education as a lecturer and work-based trainer, learning and assessment program design, and RTO compliance related work. His most recent aviation project work includes the development of qualifications in Aviation Supervision, Chief Remote Pilot, Commercial Pilot Helicopter and Air Traffic Control.

SUMMIT FACILLITATOR

/ Linda Spurr | Industry Advisor at Linda Spurr Consulting

Linda Spurr is an accomplished senior executive. She is an advisor to the aviation industry as well as working with government, Defence Primes, universities and private sector. Currently Linda is the Interim Chief Operations Officer of ANU’s Institute for Space.

Linda is a Director on several boards including Safeskies, the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame and a member of CASA’s People & Culture Sub-Committee. She is Chair of the Aviation Industry Advisory Committee for RMIT University and former Deputy Chair of Aviation Aerospace Australia. She is a strong advocate for Women in Aviation/Aerospace and is a national committee member.

Linda has been recognised a Telstra Business Women’s Awards finalist, winner of the Women’s Agenda Leadership Award and CPA Australia Awards. She is a Fellow Certified Practising Accountant and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
