Held at GE during the week of the International Society of Women Airline Pilots conference, four International Pilots will take to the stage, to talk about their experiences as female pilots, the challenges they have faced and inspiring stories about their love of flying! Followed by drinks and canapes, this is a fantastic opportunity for our Sydney members to come together to network and meet with International pilots and WA/AA committee. We hope to host more events in Sydney this year!

SPEAKERS:

MC Dr Sarah Oxenbridge
/ Research Fellow, Women, Work and Leadership Research Group (WWLRG), The University of Sydney

Dr Sarah Oxenbridge has researched work and workplaces since 1993. Since completing her PhD in 1998 she has worked as a senior researcher in the UK, New Zealand and Australia in universities, the UK civil service, and as an independent research consultant. Between 2012 and 2017, Sarah was co-director of a consultancy that conducted research on gender equality for Australian and NZ public service and defence sector organisations. She worked with them to improve the recruitment and retention of female workers by reducing gender bias in people management processes, improving flexible work arrangements, and providing support structures for women throughout their careers. She is currently engaged in a three-year University of Sydney study examining the work and career experiences of women working in highly male-dominated occupations (investment management, automotive trades, and pilots).

Lisa Norman
/ Captain, Boeing 787, Qantas Airways

Captain Lisa Norman has been flying with Qantas for 30 years and has been the Manager Introduction for the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into Flight Operations for the past four years. During her time at Qantas, Lisa has flown a range of aircraft types, including the Boeing 747-400, Boeing 767, Airbus 330 and now Boeing 787. Captain Lisa Norman has been flying with Qantas for 30 years and has been the Manager Introduction for the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into Flight Operations for the past four years. During her time at Qantas, Lisa has flown a range of aircraft types, including the Boeing 747-400, Boeing 767, Airbus 330 and now Boeing 787. 

Glenys Robison
/ Air Canada's first female Captain, retiring as B767 Captain. Chairwomen for International Society of Women Airline Pilots

Glenys began her flying career in 1976 in Edmonton where she was an instructor, corporate and charter pilot before joining Air Canada in Montreal in 1980 as the airline’s first female first officer.  In 1988 she completed a Journalism program in British Columbia and was a part-time staff writer for a community newspaper until Air Canada transferred her to Toronto in 1990. Her writing and journalism experience led to project pilot deployments in Flight Operations headquarters.  She became Manager, Regulatory Affairs in 1995 and was Air Canada’s first female captain when she was promoted on the Canadair Regional Jet in 1996. She was the CRJ Flight Manager and then Chief Pilot in 1998-2000.  After 37 fantastic years in aviation she retired as B767 Captain in December 2013.  She now lives in Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast where she is an active community volunteer. She joined the International Society of Women Airline Pilots in 1983 and is the outgoing Chairwoman.  

Terry Rinehart
/ Former Pilot for Delta Airlines and one of the founding members of the International Society of Women Airline Pilots

Born in to a fly family. Both my parents started off flying in General Aviation and both went into the Army Air Corp in WWII. My father was a ferry pilot and a transition instructor. My mother was one of the original WASP’s (Women Air Service Pilots) in the US. She was the commander of the base in Long Beach, California and had over 60 women pilots flying for her in the 6th Ferry Command. So I started flying at 16 at the local airport and decided at age 19, I wanted to be an airline pilot. I read about a female getting hired by SAS Airlines and I knew right then, that being an airline pilot was what I wanted to do. I was hired by Western Airlines in 1976 and was the first of 2 females hired in that class. I retired from Delta Airlines in 2005 as a Boeing 767 Captain after 28 years with the airlines. After my retirement with the airlines, I flew a private, corporate 767 all over the world for another 7 years and retired from that job in 2013. I currently fly our Cherokee Six for pleasure. My husband was a pilot for United Airlines for 35 years and flew for another 10 years as a corporate pilot.

Kathy McCullough
/ Former B747 Captain for Delta Airlines. Communications Chair for the International Society of Women Airline Pilots

Kathy McCullough learned to fly at the age of sixteen in Gainesville, Florida. While earning her flight hours, she was a flight attendant for rock groups while working on her multi-engine rating; flew a Cessna 206 and a Lear 23 for a coal mine in Green River, Utah; taught flying in Troutdale, Oregon; and flew A Queen Air, King Air, and Merlin for the United States Forest Service doing infrared over forest fires. She was the fourth woman pilot hired by Northwest Orient Airlines in 1981, flying the Boeing 727, McDonnell Douglas DC10 and the Boeing 747. Living in eastern Oregon on a wheat ranch, she raised two children and flew around the Pacific Rim to and from Asia for most of her career. She retired as a 747 captain, flying freight out of Anchorage, Alaska in 2007.
