BIOGRAPHIES:

/ Andrew Bauer, Base Manager at Virgin Australia

Andy joined Virgin Blue (Virgin Australia’s former name) in January 2001 after holding various Pilot roles in Australia since 1988.

After becoming a B737 Captain in 2002, he broadened his experience within the business by facilitating non-technical skills training for both Flight Crew and Cabin Crew. Andy soon became a Training Captain and in 2007 entered his first role in management as a Line Operations Manager.

Andy’s roles with Virgin Australia have experienced frequent change, from managing the B737 fleet to now managing the Brisbane Flight Crew Base with more than 400 pilots. He is an admired leader, recognised as a contender for the CEO’s leadership award and recently being awarded the Griffith University Aviation Studies award for best mentor/mentee partnership, thanks to his support of work experience students, and mentoring of fellow Virgin Australia team members.

Andy regards our people and their discretionary effort as our primary assets.

/ Ruth Harrison, Senior Project Recruiter at CAE Parc Aviation  & Women in Aviation/Aerospace Australia (WA/AA) QLD Sub-Committee Member at Aviation/Aerospace Australia

Ruth is an experienced recruitment professional with more than 15 years’ experience working with clients across aviation, aerospace, defence and technology sectors. She is currently working for CAE Parc Aviation, the recruitment arm of CAE, recruiting pilots, cabin crew and aviation related roles across the globe, focussing on the growth of the Asia Pacific region.

Ruth holds a bachelor of aerospace engineering and has recently completed a masters in space operations. She is an advocate for diversity within STEM careers and is passionate about encouraging people from diverse backgrounds into the aviation and aerospace industry.

A committee member of both Women in Aviation Aerospace Australia and the Diversity Practitioners Association, she is also a member of the Recruitment, Consulting and Staffing Association (RCSA) and Women in Aviation International (WAI). Ruth is also a freelance writer, writing about the Australian Space Industry and the people behind the technology. She also uses this platform to promote women in the Australian Space Industry, through the #HerSpaceAus feature on SpaceAustralia.com.

/ Sarah Steele, Principal Executive Officer at Learn To Fly

Sarah is the Principal Executive Officer for Learn to Fly. For the past 3 years Sarah has been responsible for developing and leading Learn to Fly in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Sector along with being the Senior Authorising Officer within their VET Student Loans Department.

Sarah graduated from CQUniversity after having studied a Graduate Diploma in Aviation (Flight Operations). Since graduating, Sarah has spent most of her career focussed on strengthening Learn to Fly’s position within the Domestic and International Aviation market, enabling students across the globe an opportunity to study at Learn to Fly. 

As a previous IFR Charter Pilot, flying Chieftains in North Queensland, Sarah is passionate about supporting students throughout their study at Learn to Fly and providing career advice on their next step after graduating.

Sarah also specialises in Initial VET and CRICOS applications for organisations seeking to be registered as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). 

Moderator:

/ Lee Turnley, Manufacturing Engineer at Boeing Aerostructures Australia & NextGenNetwork (NGN) Committee Member at Aviation/Aerospace Australia

Lee Turnley is a Manufacturing Engineer at Boeing Aerostructures Australia. 

Lee supports aircraft design and production for next generation defense platforms with a focus on design for manufacture and digital engineering. Lee has worked at Boeing since 2008, starting as a graduate.

She has worked a manufacturing engineer across both composite fabrication and component assembly, supporting numerous commercial and defense platforms, supporting production and implementing quality, safety and process improvement projects.

Lee also spent 6 years in Boeing Research and Technology as a member of the Integrated Structures team, which develops new technologies for aircraft component manufacture, with the aim of a more environmentally sustainable and efficient aircraft for Boeing customers. A particular highlight involved manufacturing a flight test article for the 787 EcoDemonstrator Program.

Lee Turnley studied at Swinburne University, where she undertook a double degree in Engineering and Science both majoring in Biotechnology.  A highlight was the opportunity to undertake a 12 month work placement at Henkel Australia, within the Research and Development, Technical Support Team for Automotive Division. 

Turnley graduated Boeing’s Leadership Excellence Acceleration Program (LEAP) as part of the Class of 2017A.
