2012 SUPER TRADE MISSION TO INDIA

Aviation/Aerospace Australia’s program covered Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai and involved a series of site visits and individual company to company meetings as well as several major networking events where we were able to meet and engage with a significant variety of aviation and aerospace organisations within India.
In 2011, the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation released its “Vision 2020″ document, pegging potential investment in the Indian aviation sector at $120 billion in that timeframe.
By 2020, the Government of India expects the fleet size of the commercial airlines sector to be approximately 1,000 aircraft; domestic passengers to number 150-180 million; a helicopter fleet of around 500; air cargo movement to reach the level of 9 million tonnes; and the potential to absorb three million jobs.
India was the fastest growing domestic market in the world in September 2011 with an 18% year on year growth. IATA forecasts that the Indian civil aviation market will maintain an annual growth rate of more than 16% in the years ahead.
2010 saw the Ministry take several initiatives to facilitate convenient and hassle-free air travel for passengers. This included the unveiling of a state-of- the-art new integrated Terminal-3 at Delhi Airport in July, with public-private participation; and the much-awaited environmental clearance for the construction of a greenfield airport at Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra. The latter is projected to have sufficient capacity to handle the additional traffic around Mumbai Airport.
In regards to the aerospace sector, before the year 2000, the state-owned firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited dominated the local market. More recently however private sector firms such as Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra and the Tata Group have been making considerable strides in acquiring the capabilities in the aerospace market.
Overall, it is clear that India’s aviation and aerospace sectors are on a significant growth phase for the foreseeable future.

This group of organisations was able to showcase a wide cross-section of Victorian capabilities at the site visits undertaken (e.g. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, TATA Consultancy Services, BEML Ltd Aerospace Division and SpiceJet), as well as individually at prearranged one-on-one business meetings.
TARGETED OPPORTUNITIES
During the many discussions and exchanges of ideas on potential areas of future engagements, a number of potential ‘key target areas’ came under frequent discussion, including the following:
Capability matching of Indian and Australian organisations to leverage opportunities under India’s offset program;
Significant Indian airport infrastructure projects in collaboration with a Victorian ‘cluster’ of entities involved in airport design, build and operations;
Co-operation in areas of UAV development;
Engagement between universities, education and training institutions on skills development;
Collaborative development of India’s General Aviation sector – developing India’s GA infrastructure needs.
MEMORANDUM OF COLLABORATION
An important milestone undertaken on this mission was the conclusion of a Memorandum of Collaboration with the Indian Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies industries (SIATI) and Aviation/Aerospace Australia at an evening function attended by the Hon Gordon Rich-Phillips, Minister responsible for the Aviation Industry.
This new collaboration will provide a regular platform of further targeted engagement and activities between the Indian and Australian sectors, including:
Co-sponsoring an annual ‘aviation and aerospace skills development and educational forum’, alternately in India and Victoria,
Respectively leading annual trade mission groups to participate in major trade events alternatively in India and Victoria.
