A/AA recently led the aviation and aerospace component of the Victorian Government Trade Mission to China. A/AA conducted a large number of high-level presentations to host organisations, and signed a major Memorandum of Collaboration with one of the country’s largest State Owned Enterprises, witnessed by the Victorian Minister Responsible for the Aviation Industry, the Hon Gordon Rich-Phillips, in Beijing.
Meetings were held in Beijing, Tianjin, Nanjing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu with senior representatives of a range of organisations, including industry regulators, universities, training colleges, legacy airlines, start-up airlines and low cost airlines, helicopter manufacturers, aircraft manufacturers, airport operators, original equipment manufacturers, unmanned aviation vehicle manufacturers and general aviation operators.
Delegates on the Mission have of course returned with an extensive list of business opportunities, but more importantly for a Mission of this nature, it was the establishment of relationships and an understanding of the unique market that China represents that will be of the most enduring value for participants.
Simply witnessing the scale of development, the size of the market, the achievements to date and the extraordinary ambitions for the aviation and aerospace sector have opened many Australian eyes to the opportunities and the challenges that the country faces.
More importantly, by hearing first-hand from those charged with managing the industry’s daunting growth, our Missioners were able to delve into the specific needs the Chinese industry have for the unique qualities that Australian companies can bring. Our reputation for quality, safety, training, education, regulatory robustness and commercialisation is highly regarded, and these represent our best opportunity to take a share of the fastest growing region in the world.
The Mission represented an excellent cross-section of the Australian aviation and aerospace capability, and was warmly received by our gracious, generous and accommodating hosts.
Individual Missioners are already following up on relationships and opportunities established on the Mission, and invitations are being exchanged for follow-up meetings, including reciprocal visits to Australia and Melbourne in 2013 to coincide with the International Air Show.
Given the enormous success of the Super Trade Mission more generally, plans are also already underway for the second Super Trade Mission to China next year, and Aviation/Aerospace Australia will once again be deeply involved.
